Course Overview
When a resident is unresponsive, has the resident made clear through a Do Not Resuscitate Order (DNRO) how they wish to be treated? This course reviews how to prepare for and handle these emergency situations. In this course, appropriate measures to handle “Do Not Resuscitate” and related outliners are very well highlighted and carefully outlined.
A Do Not Resuscitate Order (DNRO) is a form developed by the Department of Health to identify people who do not wish to be resuscitated in the event of respiratory or cardiac arrest
Introduction to DNRO
A DNR order is a legal order issued to a hospital for the withdrawal of Cardiac Resuscitation and Advanced Cardiac Life Support. The order is usually issued in honor of the wishes of the patient involved. In cases where a DNR is issued, the patient is allowed to die a natural death upon the stopping of the heart and in most cases, a DNR order only prohibits the use of intubation and Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation methods in treatment and mother modes of treatment are allowed.
At the end of this course, participants are expected to understand the fundamentals of DNR and related orders and various ways to interact with patients in handling them.
Even more, do-not-resuscitate order (DNR) is a legally binding physician’s order stating that no steps will be taken to restart a patient’s heart or restore breathing if the patient experiences cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest. These steps typically involve cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), which is not always successful and comes with risks, especially for individuals who are elderly or very ill. A DNR order may also be called a do-not-attempt-resuscitation (DNAR) order or allow-natural-death (AND) order.
